SEEING TEDDY WITH THE TWINS made Amy realize how much she wanted to have a baby with him. The four-month-old babies adored him, too, cooing and smiling up at him while he paced back and forth with a baby cradled in each arm.
Finally, diapers were changed, bottles were warmed and they were all set. Amy settled into a rocking chair with Joshua, while Teddy sat down with Jenny.
Contentment permeated the cozy room. And along with it, the fear that things might not work as wonderfully for her and Teddy as they had for Tyler and Susie... and Rebecca and Trevor.
What if she couldn’t get pregnant right away? What if it never happened? Or she had a baby, and Teddy realized it was the child he really wanted—not a life with her—after all?
“I know what you’re thinking,” Teddy said.
Nerves jumping, Amy pushed the unsettling thoughts away. “You do?”
“Sure. You’re wondering why your two sisters get all the romance—and you don’t. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix for that.” Teddy looked up from the infant in his arms and flashed a smile at Amy. “All you have to do is go on a date with me tomorrow night.”
Amy stared at Teddy in confusion. Even when they were just friends, he’d always been able to read her too well. “Aren’t we past that stage of our relationship?”
Teddy tilted his head. “How can we be past it when we’ve never been there?”
Amy shifted the baby in her arms to a more comfortable position and drew a stabilizing breath. “But we’re married, Teddy.”
Deliberately, he held her gaze. “Married people have date nights. My parents always did.”
“So did mine, but our relationship isn’t the same as theirs.” Legend had it that both sets of parents had been madly in love when they tied the knot. She and Teddy—sadly—weren’t. And odds were, never would be. Not in that all-encompassing way.
His lips took on a rueful curve. “Exactly why we have to go.”
Amy couldn’t deny the notion of embarking on a traditionally romantic outing with him held a surprisingly tantalizing appeal. Was this the start of something better? “Where do you want to go?” She forced herself to sound casual.
Teddy waggled his eyebrows. “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
Noting Joshua was drifting off to sleep again, Amy set the bottle aside and wiped a bubble of milk from his mouth with the corner of the burp cloth. She sat the baby up to burp him. “I have to know what we’re going to be doing so I’ll know how to dress.”
Teddy shifted Jenny to his shoulder. “Wear something warm and comfortable and not too nice,” he advised Amy, while patting the baby’s back.
Amy lifted a brow. What did not too nice mean? And what did that say about his plans?
“Like jeans,” Teddy clarified.
Amy pursed her lips. “What if I want to wear cashmere?” she teased him right back.
Teddy winced. “Not really a good idea. Although I would wear a hat and gloves. But not a scarf.
